Summer internships 2024

We are looking for enthusiastic interns (NL/EN) to support our team in August/September 2024.

Fancy working on projects on sustainable use of space, social infrastructure, energy districts or the transformation of landscapes into sponge landscapes? Or would you like to dive into the archives of Architecture Workroom Brussels, the innovation house that will be celebrating its 15th anniversary next year? We are looking for enthusiastic interns to support our team during the summer months on ongoing projects and in our archive work.

The interns can contribute to the following projects, among others:

  • Living Lab Herk and Mombeek: We need to make space for water not only in the valley, but also in the soils of upstream landscapes, in order to buffer and infiltrate as much water as possible. We are testing this in the Herk and Mombeek valleys: together with numerous actors, we are setting up a local Living Lab that aims to accelerate the implementation of sponge measures. During the summer months, we will further elaborate on the ambitions we set in June with the local coalition. To this end, we are looking for a motivated person who can support the visualisation of measures, cartography, illustration, inventory and research on sponge measures, et cetera - depending on your expertise and interests.
  • Living Lab Muide Meulested Fossil-Free: Together with the City of Ghent, we are setting up a local Living Lab that aims to accelerate the transition of the Muide Meulestede neighbourhood to a fossil-free district. How can we get every house and every neighbourhood renovated and connected to a sustainable energy system in an affordable and fast way? Over the next two years, we will work on an applied, but above all scalable development model for the energy transition at neighbourhood level. An intern with keen interest and good skills for cartography and with experience in GIS can contribute.
  • AWB Archives operation: With its 15th anniversary coming up, AWB wants to make extra efforts to inventory and describe its archives in function of opening up valuable records. This concerns both exhibition objects, publications and other printed material (physical archive) and digital documents, videos, photography, ... We would like to enlist the help of a trainee to help put the physical and/or the digital archive in order and describe it, so that it is preserved permanently. In this way, the intern will discover a world of knowledge, uncover it and make it easier to find and share.
  • Lesson and work package sustainable use of space ‘Wij zijn Ruimte': Together with GoodPlanet Belgium and CommonsLab, AWB is making an educational package for schools and neighbourhood associations on sustainable use of space. For this, AWB is making part of the illustrations and we developed an inspiration booklet as background information for teachers, children and neighbourhood organisations. The interns will help with text and image editing and illustrating the teaching and work package that is being completed.
  • Molenbeek for Brussels 2030: As part of the candidacy of Molenbeek and the Brussels Region to become European Capital of Culture in 2030, an artistic festival will be organised in September to celebrate the submission of the candidacy. As part of this, AWB is organising a walk in Molenbeek around Future Places, with the sub-theme of the search for how we can better coexist with natural systems, such as water and soil, in the city. The interns will help develop and support this walk.

When? This is a part- or full-time internship from 12 August 2024, for a period of about 4-6 weeks - the exact duration and days are negotiable.

Where? At our Brussels office, Avenue Pacheco 34, 1000 Brussels.

Compensation? Compensation is available according to a volunteer contract, of €40 per day.

Interested? Then send a mail to info[@]architectureworkroom.eu with a short motivation letter, portfolio and CV no later than 27 June 2024. Interviews will take place in the week of 8 to 12 July. As the exam period is not far away, it is definitely ok to send a concise portfolio with 5 drawings and accompanying project text (short).
