Djamel Klouche, L’AUC, Paris
Language: French
Location: Bozar, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, Brussels

L’AUC is a Paris-based international architecture and urbanism firm founded in 1996. The design office operates at all scales of urban design, including strategic, territorial, and local planning, urban studies, development projects and urban regeneration. In their approach architecture is seen as a way to understand the city and create new attractive points and clusters within the existing urban fabric.

The office has won different prices for their innovative practice, for instance the Palmarès National des Jeunes Urbanistes in 2005. L’AUC was one of the ten teams commissioned for the ‘Grand Paris’ competition launched by the French government in 2008.

Recent projects on the productive city involve a research by design trajectory for the IABR-2016 projectatelier Rotterdam and the urban regeneration project for Fives Cail Babcock where a disused factory site was transformed into a mixed zone for housing, economic and public facilities.

Djamel Klouche, architect and urbanist, is a co-founder and partner at l’AUC. He obtained his degree in architecture at l’école d’architecture de Paris-la-Seine and completed his education at l’école des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and at l’Institut des sciences politiques de Paris. He is associated at l’école d’architecture de Versailles as professor of architecture.

Tobias Armborst, INTERBORO, New York
Bert Gellynck, 1010au, Brussels
Language: English
Location: Bozar, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, Brussels
At the occasion of OASE Journal for Architecture 96: Social Poetics: The Architecture of Use and Appropriation.

Interboro partners is a New York city-based architecture, urban design and planning office that specializes in the design of public spaces. Their approach is place-specific and deploys design solutions and participatory processes to create open environments that work for everyone.

Their recent projects range from temporary installations in public space to regional development plans. Some recent examples include an art space and sculpture park in Lower Manhattan, a linkeable series of urban furniture as well as a regional resilience plan for Long Islands’ South shore that copes with the issue of floods and storms after Sandy.

Tobias Armborst is an architect and urban designer who co-founded Interboro. He received a Diplom Ingenieur in Architecture from RWTH Aachen and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the Harvard Design School. He is Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Studies at Vassar College.

1010 [ten-ten] is a design studio for architecture and urbanism, based in Brussels. The office works at the scale of the city and strongly believes in an integral approach of the design process in which the relation between architecture, public space and society is acknowledged. They consider their role to be the one of an author and sometimes also the director, actor and producer.

Julian Lewis, EAST, London
Language: English
Location: Bozar, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, Brussels

East is an award winning architecture, landscape and urban design practice established in London since 1995. The office concentrates on projects of public relevance and is internationally recognised for it’s innovative rol in adjusting and improving the urban fabric and its different uses through design. Their projects always start with a careful reading of places and their spatial relationships and an understanding of a wide range of factors connected to the specific place and it’s different uses. Architecture is in their philosohpy acknowledged as an intervention into a situation that influences its success and value, and always in relation to the public realm. Or in their own words: “We use architecture to tickle, stimulate, and accommodate.”

Recent projects carried out by East include new housing in Hackney Wick, Brent, and Newham. Public realm spaces have been delivered in Haringey, and Waltham Forest, and three new school expansion projects in Southend.

Julian Lewis is an architect and co-founder and director of East. He is a member of the Newham Design Advisor Panel, and has been teaching and lecturing since 1992, having held a Diploma Unit teaching post at London Metropolitan University for 13 years. Julian was invited by Valentin Bearth as visiting professor at the school of architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland, and taught there from 2009 to 2011. Julian is regularly invited to lecture on the work of East and is Visiting Critic for the Mayors’ Project Review Panel.
