Zeebrugge Revitalisation— Urban Renewal Project
The ‘Architecture Workroom Brussels – 51N4E – Tractebel – Rebel - Simply Community’ design team was appointed by the City of Bruges to provide support for the design of the 'Zeebrugge Revitalisation' urban renewal project.
Due to the presence of large-scale infrastructure and programmatic barriers, Zeebrugge is characterised by a highly fragmented and isolated urban fabric. Nevertheless these enclaves are located in close proximity to diverse, rich landscapes; there are many major mobility connections and extensive infrastructures of regional importance. The future of these districts in Zeebrugge will thus not only be determined in the districts themselves, but also by related present or potential levers, dynamics and potentials.
During this project's competition phase the design team proposed four futures: Zeebrugge as a city, Zeebrugge as a seaside resort, Zeebrugge as a workplace and Zeebrugge as a polder. These futures are possible readings of Zeebrugge, each based on a 'quality' that is already available today, but that can be further activated or reinforced in the longer term. Resulting in four powerful future stories that offer a framework for the various developments in Zeebrugge.
