Spoor Oost— Urban Renewal Project
Along with the 51N4E team and anthropologist Ruth Soenen (Simply Community), Architecture Workroom has been appointed by AG Vespa to lead the 'Spoor Oost' urban renewal project in Antwerp. The team will study potential future scenarios by means of, for example, workshops with stakeholders and local residents as well as specific interventions on the ground.
The former National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB/NMBS) site occupies a pivotal location alongside the Antwerp Ring Road and branches out to highly diverse parts of the city. It is a space that has something to offer on both the local and supralocal scale. Various ecological, productive and social axes in the city can be linked by Spoor Oost and activated via targeted interventions at the site.
The newly constructed basic infrastructure will be implemented and developed according to the plan designed by Technum/Roter, in which the need for overflow parking for the Sportpaleis and the space for events will be reconciled with the wider context of the environment as a whole, with the needs of the surrounding residential districts and the demand for a human scale, a buffer and identity on the ground.
