Publication— Designing the Future

On Wednesday 18 April 2018 Architecture Workroom Brussels, the Team Vlaams Bouwmeester (Flemish Government Architect Team), the Vlaamse Vereniging voor Ruimte en Planning (Flemish Association for Space and Planning), the Openbare Vlaamse Afvalstoffenmaatschappij (Public Waste Agency of Flanders) and the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam IABR presented the new publication Designing the Future, a 'workbook' on design research as leverage for social transition.

Today, various global challenges manifest themselves as complex spatial issues. Design appears to be a powerful medium to visualize, shape and, if necessary, adjust the necessary change processes. This book bundles the insights from the series of round tables and lectures that the initiators have devoted to the themes of mobility, care, living, the productive city, open space, water and the urban metabolism, from December 2016 to February 2017, under the heading 'Designing the Future'. A very diverse group of officials, academics, designers, champions of civilian cooperatives, project developers, activists, (social) entrepreneurs, civil society organisations’ representatives, consultants, students and investors from both Belgium and the Netherlands, went in conversation, looking for a shared agenda to shape a better future together.

The book is not a final piece, but a stepping stone in the development of an alternative working environment. The call to a different practice, in which all existing expertise and experience around 'creating a city' can be bundled from a shared mission, sounds ever louder. In this sense, the 'Designing the Future' working sessions and the book also tie in with the ambition of the IABR 2018+2020 THE MISSING LINK, which aims to tackle the urgent challenges of tomorrow through longer learning and development projects, such as the Delta Atelier.

Designing the Future is an initiative of Architecture Workroom Brussels, the Team Vlaams Bouwmeester (Flemish Government Architect Team), the Vlaamse Vereniging voor Ruimte en Planning (Flemish Association for Space and Planning), the Openbare Vlaamse Afvalstoffenmaatschappij (Public Waste Agency of Flanders) and the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam IABR.
