International Atelier— Eurometropolis

In a two-days atelier session, international experts were invited to participate in discussion and design sessions, to develop new ideas, concepts, and organizational principles to deal with the current and future challenges of the Eurometropolis Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai and to nourish the brief for a federating project. In preparation of the atelier, the context of the territory of Eurometropolis with its different challenges and questions was summarized in a preparatory document to nourish the international experts during the atelier session.

To create a dynamic workshop atmosphere and allow for a fruitful exchange between knowledge of the territory and refreshing, external views and experiences, the international experts - Mark Brearley (London, UK), Ido Avissar (Paris, FR) et Thomas Sieverts (München, DE) - were confronted with local – or regional – experts, policy makers and societal actors.

The general focus of the two-days atelier was the green and blue network connecting the Eurometropolis over the borders of its three regions. Three thematic approaches – that are linked to this green and blue network – structured the work in the atelier.

1.     Next economy

Two tracks of thinking are explored: On the hand, the importance of the blue network and her impact on the new canal Seine-Nord as leverage for economic development. On the other hand, the development of creative industry on key places linked to this blue network.

2.     The productive landscape

Supported by relations between agri-food and the secondary network, thinking tracks are developed for a more resilient and integrated system, based on innovative practices.

3.     Diffuse metropolis

The ambition of this atelier was to outline development scenarios that will lead to a more coherent system, which connects infrastructure, places of creation of employment and places of creation of knowledge.
