Atelier De Stad Brussels— Kanal Play Ground

Kanal Play Ground is a call for projects in collaboration with Platform Kanal, in search of visions to create public space where it is scarce. Urban spaces for play, sport and socializing that are suited to the children, young people and families in these central districts. For temporary transformations during summer 2014.

Kanal Play Ground has been selected to be one of the five projects in the television show Atelier De stad on Canvas.

The canal area combines numerous social, ecological and economic challenges. Yet this territory, stretching from the north to the south of the Region, also offers plenty of potential in connection with its industrial past and its young population, thus making it possible to respond to these multiple challenges.

The variety of its urban space offers the possibility of reinventing the very idea of public space: How can the co-existence of different functions be managed, and the city opened up to its young population by creat

ing activities that reflect their interests? How can we reinvent the ways that spaces are used and create new locations for leisure, training, creativity, socializing, play and sport?

To support the changes which are underway, an exploratory and operational process has been defined around a call for projects and an exploratory workshop with the aim of stimulating the imagination while meeting the needs of a young, dynamic and creative population.

The primary target group consists of students, young professionals and enthusiasts for design, the visual arts, architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering and related disciplines. The call for projects is organised into two sections: one relating to a public space strategy for the entire canal area, and the other to the creation of mobile and removable installations.
