Architecture Workroom
Brussels

Method

Architecture Workroom has been steadily developing to become a cultural operator to be reckoned with, cooperating with as complete a network of actors as possible in order to gather and establish knowledge, organise workshops and present the results to a wider audience. It is Architecture Workroom’s intention to focus the minds of all parties concerned in the field of spatial design by bringing about change from within.

Architecture Workroom Brussels deliberately chose not to develop as a hermetic, solipsistic workshop specialising in mono-disciplinary innovation, or as a cultural centre, channelling subsidies toward artistic productions and activities. As a self-declared think-and-act tank, Architecture Workroom is keen to form alliances with other parties who are concerned with the development of our physical environment. As a pivotal platform at the service of designers, politicians, administrators and citizens, Architecture Workroom has found its niche, operating as a 'cultural player', an organisation proposing to gather all the relevant stakeholders and cultural institutions to discuss politically relevant en social questions, with a view to developing innovative solutions.

Unlike autonomous critical reflective artistic activities, architecture and urban design are applied art forms. Spatial design gains its relevance in the critical area between its inherent fundamental requirements on the one hand and societal challenges on the other hand. Architecture Workroom is fuelling the debate on the part qualitative design and applied research have to play in architecture, within the context of official policy and as a factor of the ‘spatialisation’ of political instruments, as well as within the framework of public opinion, in order to create an atmosphere in which design and conceptual designs can feed societal debate.

To this end, Architecture Workroom has been active on several fronts.  In its role as a laboratory for spatial design, it is developing an intellectual framework for the work the city needs doing. In collaboration with other concerned parties, AW is gathering and establishing knowledge to prepare for the societal challenges the (near) future will bring, and it is coordinating workshops to pick up on some concrete questions and problem spots elsewhere, in partner cities, thus addressing both knowledge and practice. Testing new solutions and gathering knowledge go hand in hand, as it strives to contribute to an evolving planning culture, in a concerted effort to collaborate with all responsible and concerned parties. All the while, efforts are being made to involve a wider audience in the process of thought, exchange and decision making regarding their future working and living environment, by providing publications, workshops and exhibitions.
