Els Vervloesem

Els Vervloesem (1978) is an architect, researcher, writer and partner in Architecture Workroom Brussels. She graduated as an architect from the Henry van de Velde Institute in Antwerp in 2001 and in 2004 completed her post-initial Master’s course in ‘Human Settlements’ at KU Leuven. From 2001 to 2005 she worked as a freelance architect for several architectural firms, including Luc Deleu and B-architects. In 2006 she joined the Urbanism research group at TU Eindhoven as a Ph.D. researcher in a combined team of architects, urban planners and anthropologists, headed by Bruno De Meulder and Michiel Dehaene. Her Ph.D. research looks at the complex interaction between urban planning and bottom-up urban development processes and focuses on the place that newcomers, migrants and other marginalised groups are allocated and claim for themselves. As from 2011 she was a researcher and teacher in the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Spatial Planning (ASRO) at KU Leuven. In 2012, together with Pieter Van den Broeck, she organised the interdisciplinary summer workshop – ‘Questioning Temporary Urbanisms’ – in the Luchtbal social housing district in Antwerp as part of the SPINDUS research project. She also engages, on a project basis, in a variety of studies, workshops, and publications on architecture, urban planning and urban transformation processes that are intended to make academically-founded insights into pressing social-spatial issues visible, debatable and comprehensible for both the general public and a specialised audience. She works on these projects in varying cooperative groupings together with designers, urban designers, planners, sociologists, anthropologists and artists. She also provides advice on the development of urban projects. In 2012 she co-wrote the book ‘Urban Renewal Projects in Flanders 2002-2011’ together with Bruno De Meulder and André Loeckx. In 2013-14 she curated the series of thematic lectures entitled ‘Architecture and Social Change’ together with Marleen Goethals at the request of the Stad en Architectuur organisation. 2015 sees publication of ‘Camping Paradiso’, containing short stories she co-wrote with Barbara Van Dyck, and with photographs by Marie-Françoise Plissart, which aims to stir up debate on the issue of permanent residence on camping sites.
