As economies are struggling with how to maintain both a workforce base and vibrant diverse cities, manufacturing is coming into the fore again to provide fundamental economic resources. For decades in the Western world, manufacturing has been pushed out to the urban edges, the hinterlands, and then to other countries shores where labor and land are cheaper. Nina Rappaport, author of Vertical Urban Factory argues that now manufacturing is smaller, lighter, cleaner, and greener it is possible to return manufacturing to cities in individual factory buildings that can be taller and more compact to save land, transit, and resources.
In the Summer School Urban Factory Today, eleven architecture students were asked to investigate the potential for such a hybrid urban factory building on a site in Long Island City, New York. In order to understand the potential and hurdles for manufacturing in the city, one must engage with factory owners, manufacturers, city officials, industrial developers etc. During factory visits and interviews with factory owners, workers and city officials, the experience of manufacturing in the city was stimulated and knowledge gathered. The Summer School resulted in nine diverse proposals for the contemporary hybrid urban factory, which will be presented in a public conversation Learning from New York, Learning from Brussels between our team and selected guests, followed by the launch of the publication Urban Factory Today.
